What Is Forest School?

Forest School developed in Scandinavia in the 1950s and is becoming increasingly popular in the UK and the rest of the world. It is an educational approach that promotes holistic development and learning in an outdoor setting.

Forest School is child-led learning which encourages independence, resilience, confidence and creativity. By being in a woodland environment, children develop an understanding and love of the natural world around them.

Taking place regularly over a prolonged period, Forest School allows participants to experience the changing seasons and how they affect the weather and the environment.

Children learn to take appropriate risks and to assess how to protect both themselves and their natural surroundings.
